Flex Bug Quash Denver!

If you haven't heard, there's a bug quash event going on this month (the 28th) in Seattle. Adobe is sponsoring a bug quash event for developers to get together and help nail SDK bugs, and make the SDK better for us all!

EUI is planning to host a Denver branch of the bug quash, the same day at our office. We'll buy the pizza and the soda, you bring your laptop! We're looking to start around 10am and wrap up around 5pm. We'll be connected with Seattle over Adobe Connect to work with them.

You'll need to sign up in advance to work on SDK bugs, so you can check out and in code and such.

Don't feel up to squashing bugs? come hang out and learn a thing or two from some awesome developers, help test the fixes, bring in fresh cans of coke, whatever come hang with cool developers and help make the Flex SDK even better.

Seeking Adobe Connect Hosting/Flashcom webconferencing

Anyone in RMAUG have any suggestions for hosting companies for webcasts (slide deck, audio broadcast, and q&a). I've participated in Breeze/Connect, Webex, On24, Go2Meeting. I'm trying to find a reliable and reasonably priced vendor.

Non-traditional MVC guidance?

First I'd like to say that's it great that I ran across this forum (seeing how I'm a 3 week old virgin to Flex/AS development) and I look forward to driving down one of these Tuesdays to see/meet you folks.

I'm looking for smaller/stripped-down examples/tutorials on the MVC architecture. I fell the app I'm currently working on does not justify a full blown structure, such as Cairngorm, PureMVC, etc... It's smaller but yet becoming unmanageable. I want to be able to have it extensible and easy to maintain.

I did run across one of the CookBook examples on the Adobe site; however, any thoughts or extra info are much appreciated.

Flex Builder 3 + Mac Tower + Heap Space Issues

I have developed in Flex Builder on my mac book pro for over a year now and not had this problem.

I just bought a new Mac Pro tower. I've installed Flex Builder 3 stand alone from adobe's website (still in trial mode) - Build # 3.0.205647. I have installed a few extensions such as Subclipse, PyDev Extensions, CF extensions, JSEclipse, JDT for eclipse 3.3.2

NO MATTER WHAT I DO IN FLEX BUILDER, I GET ERRORS SUCH AS BELOW WHENEVER I TRY TO BUILD MY WORKSPACE.
I can have 10 projects in my workspace or 1 and it doesn't matter. When I look at my configuration through Flex Builder 3 -> About Adobe Flex Builder 3, I see the above VMARGS were reported accurately (not an ini parsing issue). My Flex Builder is set to use the system default java 1.5. I originally had 2GB of ram and was getting this error. I just added 8GB of ram to make 10GB of ram total, which has had no effect the problem.

Anyone got any ideas? Could be plug-in hell/compatibility? Where else would JVM heapspace args need to be set (system wide?)? I have reinstalled a few times now trying to get the cleanest install for the features I need, but I get this error everytime and have thus not been able to get any development done with this machine as of yet.

2D & 3D Animation Techniques Using After Effects

In this full-day session, Trish and Chris Meyer will share their favorite tricks and techniques to create motion graphic animations using Adobe After Effects. Their primary focus will be making complex animations easy, demonstrating how to use Parenting, Nesting, Expressions, Behaviors, Animation Presets, the Puppet Tool, 3D cameras and lights, Vanishing Point, and integrating with dedicated 3D applications. They will then show how to use the Color Management system introduced in After Effects CS3, including how to manage a variety of media and create output for both broadcast and the web. The session will end with a demonstration of several of the new features in After Effects CS4 that will be of interest to motion graphics artists.

Problem with RSVP

When I try to RSVP to the next meeting on September 30, and I enter my email address '--- removed by admin ---', it says that I need to enter a valid email address. I know I am entering it correctly and have tried a few different times to do so. Thought I would let someone know about the problem.

Does anyone have any info on how swfs are being indexed by search engines yet?

I saw the "Fleximagically Searchable" contest, but that looks to have been submarined without any tangible results... googling "filetype:swf" returns some decent examples, but as you'll see some results return raw HTML while others return valid keywords/phrases. What distinguishes the index results?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Flash Media Server - setup question

Hi group,
I installed FMS Development (which is the same as Interactive with the exception of allowing only 10 simultaneous connections instead of infinite) on a Windows server. The installation was successful, but I don't know how to access the VOD (video on demand) test files via a HTTP or RTMP connection from. The server does not have IIS installed on it, but that didn't seem to be a requirement. I'm trying to access them from our Windows web server that, of course, does have IIS installed on it. RTMP doesn't work in a browser. Am I forgetting to set up something on the server with FMS installed on it?

MAX 2008 Debugging and Profiling with Flex Builder - Feedback Appreciated

If you were to attend a session called "Debugging and Profiling with Flex Builder" at the intermediate/advanced level what types of things would you expect/want to see in the session?

I'm curious what the going rate is for designers and developers, and would like to know what your (or your company) hourly rates are...

To start, how about just two categories: under and over 1 year experience.

Also, do you find that design-only gigs tend to pay less? In my experience, designers are the oft-overlooked key to usability. Maybe I've been working for the wrong companies, but it seems like designers tend to be paid less than developers, even though the best-architected system is useless if nobody can use it.

Anyone care to chime in? The techs I'm especially interested in the going rates for:

Flex
Flash
Flash Video
Photoshop/AI

Naturally, rates vary from region to region, so input from the local community would be greatly appreciated.

Firefox SOAP/Web Service crossdomain.xml fix

It took me forever to track this one down, hopefully this will save you some time.

I built a Flex app that uses .NET Web Services, and it worked fine in IE and Safari. Unfortunately, I was getting the dreaded, uninformative, "Error 2032 Stream Error" when loading the same page in Firefox.

As it turns out, Firefox doesn't send the proper http request headers when making the call to the WS.

Solution: Add the allow-http-request-headers-from-domain tag to your crossdomain.xml file a la:

Voila! The trick, she is done.

What technologies is Adobe bringing to the U.S. mobile market? It seems that (according to http://www.adobe.com/mobile/solutions/faq/ ) they really only have usage in Japan via NTT DoCoMo.

Is anyone here running Flash Cast or Flash Lite apps on their phones?

If so, what kind of apps are you using? Games?
If not, why not?

What is Thermo?

At the April RMAUG meeting, a few of the RealEyes team members mentioned an upcoming Adobe product code-named Thermo. In short, Thermo is for Flex what Fireworks is for HTML.

We heard that you wanted to know more, so here is a brief overview of this drool-worthy concept (taken straight from the Adobe Labs site) and a few links.

"Thermo" is an upcoming Adobe product that makes it easy for designers to create rich Internet application UIs. Thermo allows designers to build on familiar workflows to visually create working applications that easily flow into production and development.
Features

Use drawing tools to create original graphics, wireframe an application design, or manipulate artwork imported from Adobe Creative Suite tools.
Turn artwork from Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Fireworks directly into functional components that use the original artwork as a "skin".
Define and wire up interactive behavior, such as what to do when a user clicks on something, without having to write code.
Easily design UIs that work with dynamic data, such as a list of contacts or product information, without having access to the actual data source. Design-time sample data can be used as a realistic placeholder when laying out an application, testing interactivity, and choreographing motion.

Applications created in Thermo are Flex applications that can be loaded directly into Flex Builder, providing a great roundtrip workflow for designers collaborating with developers. The designer's work can be incorporated directly into the production application with no loss of fidelity, and designers can continue to refine the design throughout the iterative development process.
